What You Could Do

Our graduate development programme is recognised as one of the best in the business – and it’s definitely no boring 9 to 5. You even learn how to drive a bus!

  • We have two key programmes: an operational management scheme and an engineering management scheme.
  • The two-year graduate programmes give you real hands-on business experience, complemented by a wide range of off-the-job development and classroom-style tuition.
  • With the right application and ambition, you can fast-track your way to a full-time management position.

About You

  • With or expecting a 2:2 degree
  • An articulate and effective communicator
  • Enjoy teamwork
  • Able to relate to a wide range of people
  • Confidence to take on responsibility and accountability for results at an early stage of your career.

Operational management scheme

Year One

  • You are based at locations which could be anywhere in the UK. There’s also regular travel to undertake courses and training exercises with the other graduates all over the country.
  • The operational programme equips you with the knowledge and management skills you need to run one of our depots – each one is a multi-million-pound business in its own right.
  • The key to the first year is that we don't waste a single day of the programme: you follow a structured schedule that takes you through the different aspects of the business: engineering, finance and budgeting, marketing and operations. You even learn how to drive a bus yourself.
  • You have the support of an experienced mentor who meets you every month to assess your progress. And, because we carefully balance the levels of responsibility and support, you'll finish the year with complete confidence in your own abilities.

Year Two

  • You move to a new location and take up a management position. These 12 months provide an opportunity to learn on the job and prove yourself as a leader, while you continue to receive guidance and support.
  • After the programme has been successfully completed, you will be appointed as an operations manager in one of our operating companies.
  • From there, your future career progression will be driven by your own ambition and aspirations, with opportunities to reach director roles within two years.

Engineering management scheme

  • This is not a programme for graduates who want to become design engineers. It's for engineering graduates who want to become business-focused managers - in a very short space of time. The ultimate aim is to prepare you to become a future Engineering Director of Stagecoach UK Bus.
  • You'll be able to progress so quickly because the programme won't just develop you into a technical specialist. Through a combination of practical experience, courses and job shadowing, you will also become an expert business manager.

Year Two

  • After the first twelve months have been completed, you move to a different location and take up your first management position.
  • This is your opportunity to continue to learn on the job and take your first steps as a leader and manager.
  • On successful completion of your second year you will be appointed engineering manager in one of our operating companies.
  • From there, your future career progression will be driven by your own ambition and aspirations, with opportunities to reach director roles within two years.
